Georgia can’t even pass a weak hate crimes bill. Wonder why?

Note: Not a damned thing has happened on this issue since I originally posted in February (except for hate crime) so I’m re-posting with a more exasperated headline. Update: In an article published today, Gov. Kemp said he’s “open” to hate crime legislation, but wouldn’t say he’d sign it–essentially the same message I received from Rep. Mitchell, who met with Kemp on the issue early in the General Assembly session. Nothing has changed. If Governor Kemp hates crime so much, why doesn’t he hate hate crimes? By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Brian Kemp hates gangs. In 2018, the self-described “politically incorrect conservative” promised he would “protect Georgia families by crushing street gangs.” Now, his second year in office, the governor has unveiled his…

In Georgia Senate race, Ossoff ad draws quick response from Teresa Tomlinson

Some candidates stand on their own and speak for themselves, others don’t–how is that a winning strategy? By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Jon Ossoff’s campaign unveiled a new ad today touting Rep. John Lewis’s endorsement in Ossoff’s quest to unseat Georgia Sen. David Perdue. Much of the footage in his ad comes from Ossoff’s failed 2017 Sixth District Congressional campaign, when Ossoff used Lewis’s endorsement and a wad of cash to bull his way to the front of line, freezing out other Democrats. That. Did. Not. End. Well. Actually, it didn’t start well, either, but that’s another story. Ossoff’s heavy reliance on Lewis raises questions about his Senate campaign, like why isn’t he speaking for himself? And what does the candidate have to…

Is Jon Ossoff the Democratic front-runner in Georgia? Endorsements tell a different tale

Above: A fews of Teresa Tomlinson’s endorsements. See them all here. Update: Watch Sunday night’s Democratic candidate debate. By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman I’ve written on this issue before, but the story needs updating. Last week, the AJC reported on a poll of 591 Georgia voters conducted by the Georgia GOP House Caucus. The poll pointed to “troubling signs” for Georgia Republicans, especially Sen. Kelly Loeffler. The results were brighter for Sen. David Perdue. In a head-to-head matchup with Democrat Jon Ossoff, Perdue leads 45%-39%, with 12% of voters undecided. Those numbers aren’t good for Ossoff, and fit with the grim narrative that he can’t beat the incumbent. Interestingly, there was no polling of a matchup between Perdue and other Democrats, most notably…
