Southern Baptist Convention makes history with first black president

The Southern Baptist Convention was formed in Augusta, Georgia in 1845 due to schism between North and South over slavery. The SBC continued on its peculiar path after the Civil War, and the nation’s largest Protestant denomination became a bulwark of white supremacy and segregation. In 1995,  the organization finally renounced its racist origin and subsequent practices. Since then, minority membership in the SBC has increased dramatically. On Monday, 167 years after its founding, a historic change occurred. By acclamation, the convention selected African-American minister Fred Luter Jr. of New Orleans as its first black president. LA beating victim Rodney King has died

Rodney King, famous victim of Los Angeles police brutality in 1991 has died, apparently drowning in a swimming pool.  He was 47.   His beating by officers was videorecorded, and when police were acquitted of charges against them in the case, riots erupted.  King publicly called for peace, asking, “Can’t we all just get along?”  That issue remains in doubt. Blogger sues Cumming mayor over Open Meetings incident

Blogger and local activist Nydia Tisdale has filed a federal lawsuit against Mayor H. Ford Gravitt and the City of Cumming alleging violation of Georgia’s Open Meetings Act on April 17, when Gravitt ordered her removed from City Council Chambers for attempting to videotape a regular council meeting. Her legal action follows a similar suit filed by Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens. Tisdale’s suit also names Cumming Police Chief Casey Tatum and officer Walter Cook. George Zimmerman’s wife arrested

Shellie Zimmerman’s been charged with perjury for allegedly lying to hide the money she and her husband were collecing from their website. Trymaine Lee, in the Huffington Post, writes: Shellie Zimmerman, the wife of the Florida man charged with fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, was arrested and charged Tuesday afternoon with one count of perjury, according to law enforcement officials. The charges stem from what prosecutors have described as a series of lies and distortions made by the couple during an earlier bond hearing in April, when George Zimmerman and his family claimed they were broke. By late Tuesday afternoon, Shellie Zimmerman posted bond, set at $1,000. Shortly after the initial bond hearing, it was revealed that George Zimmerman had raised upwards of $200,000…
