DeKalb early vote plan cuts out Tucker Rec Center, Northlake Saturday voting
(Originally published March 9, 2018) By Jonathan Grant In today’s meeting, the DeKalb County Board of Elections discussed but did not vote on a staff Early Voting plan for the May 22 primary. The big news: Tucker Rec Center is out as an EV site, and two Saturdays and one Sunday of early voting are proposed. Tucker also comes up short for advanced early voting, since early voting at Tucker Library will be available during the last week of early voting, May 14-18. In addition, there would be no Saturday voting for Tucker. It also looks like the Stonecrest/Lithonia area is getting shortchanged on advanced early voting, with the nearest polls 10-15 miles away. . The Board will approve an early voting…
HB 680: Georgia lawmakers make bipartisan push for paper ballots
By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Six state representatives–three from each party–have cosponsored House Bill 680, which would abolish Georgia’s shaky electronic voting system and replace it with one utilizing more secure paper ballots. Recent security breaches, hacking threats, and a constant stream of news about Russian attempts to interfere with U.S. elections have made this move necessary, although Georgia’s hyperpartisan Secretary of State Brian Kemp–who happens to be running for Governor–has been reluctant to admit faults or make changes. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the bill’s effective date is January 1, 2019. I hope there’s a will and a way to push this measure forward to at least have an effect on November’s elections … but Nooooo. Damn. In…
Virginia’s tied race–and legislature–goes to Republicans
Following a tied race, a random drawing gives Republicans control of the Virginia legislature. From the Washington Post: RICHMOND — A Virginia elections official reached into an artsy stoneware bowl, pulled out a name and declared Republican David Yancey the winner of a House of Delegates race that could determine which political party controls the chamber. Virginia staged a dramatic, rare election lottery, livestreamed across the country, to settle a tie between Yancey, an incumbent from Newport News, and Democrat Shelly Simonds. The spectacle drew national attention as an odd way to decide a highly consequential contest. But it might not be the last word in a saga that’s taken more turns than the clay that went into that wheel-thrown bowl, borrowed…
