Coweta GOP melts down on FB over increasing prospect of Democrat Jill Prouty in runoff

By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Click for info on voting in Tuesday’s election There are so many reasons for voters to support Democrat Jill Prouty in the  Sept. 3 Primary in Georgia House District 71, but I don’t think I can offer a more compelling case for her candidacy than Coweta County Republicans recently did in an extended bush-league rant fest on the Coweta GOP Facebook page.  Prouty’s campaign has gained traction in what has been a reliably red district, and the increasingly likely prospect is that she’ll push past two of three Republican candidates and make the Oct. 1 runoff. This has Republican candidates fearing they’ll be left in the dust, so of course they panic a little. Establishment favorite…

We need to talk about the DeKalb Board of Elections

By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman The DeKalb Board of Elections has more than its share of problems and several voting rights activists and grassroots volunteers spoke out about those issues and suppport for an ongoing audit at today’s DeKalb Board of Commissioners meeting. Liz Throop, Betsy Schwalbach, and others outlined many of the problems DeKalb voters faced last November: long lines, inadequate facilities for early voting, and problems with absentee ballots highlighted their list of concerns. This included 4,700 missing absentee ballots in DeKalb that remain a matter of dispute and investigation (supposedly) by the Secretary of State’s office. As a result of this and other issues, thousands of DeKalb Citizens were unable to vote in the general election. Worth noting: DeKalb had…

Spread the Vote fights voter suppression. You can help today!

Time-sensitive information Spread the Vote, a non-partisan organization that helps people get photo IDs so they can vote, is the middle of a challenge fundraiser. The goal: $20,000 in donations by May 28 (next Tuesday) to qualify for a $20,000 matching grant from a generous donor. According to the group’s founder, this will enable Spread the Vote to provide for 1,000 photo IDs. Click here to donate.  Click here to volunteer. Photo IDs and voter suppression As soon as Republicans gained control of the Georgia General Assembly in 2005, they passed a restrictive photo ID law for voting, because with great power comes great fear of losing said power. The concept was easy to sell to the public. Photo IDs prevent voter fraud, right? And…

Big turnout in Sandy Springs for Lucy McBath’s first open house

By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman It was a big crowd, and overwhelmingly friendly. Well over 100 people turned out Saturday morning to see Georgia’s newest member of Congress at her new district office in Sandy Springs. During her remarks, Rep. Lucy McBath said she plans at least four town halls this year, starting with one in East Cobb County in April. (I overheard a pitch from constituents to staffers for one in John’s Creek, as well.) McBath rose to national prominence as a spokesman for gun reform after her son Jordan Davis was killed at a Florida Convenience store during a dispute over loud music. Early last year, she was planning to run for the Georgia House, but decided to step onto the national…

Brian Kemp’s stupid stunt: last-minute investigation of Democrats.

Update: Investigators find no evidence for Georgia Gov. Kemp’s hacking claim From the AJC:  Sixteen months later, the attorney general’s office released a report Tuesday finding no evidence of a hack and closing the investigation Kemp had launched. No election information was damaged, stolen or lost, according to the report, and there was no evidence of computer crimes. Democratic Party of Georgia Chairwoman Nikema Williams said Kemp created “outright lies” to attack his political opponents and help his election. Original story: Last-minute investigations are fun!  Spoiler alert: This is some serious BS coming from the Georgia GOP. It reminds of the Josh McLaurin case, when the State GOP folded like a cheap tent after its false and malicious mailers drew a libel suit. It is…
