The Associated Press is reporting that this was done at the request of Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara. Previously, O’Mara had hinted to the media that he thought Zimmerman might be declared indigent, and money raised by the website to help fund his defense would complicate the issue.
However, it appears that donations had been pouring into the website, and the defendant’s family reports receiving more than $200,000 in donations to the site, according to CNN.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. He has pleaded not guilty and claims he acted in self-defense.
