Georgia Rep. Tommy Benton is a Lost Cause. Will Jackson County voters say “Enough’s enough?”

Above: State Rep. Tommy Benton shares his thoughts about the late Rep. John Lewis Part 1: “You can’t fix stupid” By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Last week was not a good one for Georgia Republicans. Gov. Brian Kemp continued his stumble through a Covid-induced haze, and his plan for a special legislative session got pushback from the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House. The party’s image took a blow when crazy-talkin’ Qanon supporter/purveyor Marjorie Taylor Greene won the party’s 14th Congressional District runoff in a landslide. New polls show tight races for presidenta and senator, confirming Georgia’s status as a swing state. To top it off (or bottom it out), unreconstructed State Rep. Tommy Benton burst back onto the public stage and…

In Georgia Senate race, Ossoff ad draws quick response from Teresa Tomlinson

Some candidates stand on their own and speak for themselves, others don’t–how is that a winning strategy? By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Jon Ossoff’s campaign unveiled a new ad today touting Rep. John Lewis’s endorsement in Ossoff’s quest to unseat Georgia Sen. David Perdue. Much of the footage in his ad comes from Ossoff’s failed 2017 Sixth District Congressional campaign, when Ossoff used Lewis’s endorsement and a wad of cash to bull his way to the front of line, freezing out other Democrats. That. Did. Not. End. Well. Actually, it didn’t start well, either, but that’s another story. Ossoff’s heavy reliance on Lewis raises questions about his Senate campaign, like why isn’t he speaking for himself? And what does the candidate have to…

Protesting Kafka for kids: Atlanta’s huge “Families Belong Together” march, rally

By Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Families belong together. Across the United States, that was the message at 750 protests protesting the Trump Administration’s horribly cruel immigration policies that includes separating families, keeping kids in cages and putting toddlers on trial without an attorney. The sheer ugliness of the “zero tolerance” plan is beyond belief, even surreal: Kafka for kids. Several million marchers across the U.S. I haven’t seen any authoritative crowd estimates for the march and rally here in Atlanta (AJC gave a lame “several thousand”) but it was huge. I was in the middle of the march and I’d guesstimate it was at least 7,500 and maybe 10,000. (DIY crowd estimate.I didn’t see the doll babies in cages some protesters marched with,…

Update: Georgia Democratic Congressional candidates on Twitter, Facebook, web

Jonathan Grant @Brambleman In 2016, four of Georgia’s 10 Republican members of Congress ran unopposed in the November general election, and the rest faced only token opposition. How bad was it? We were lucky if  our Democratic candidate had a Facebook page. In my district, the Infamous Sixth, there was debate over whether or not Tom Price’s opponent, Rodney Stooksbury, even existed. Not only that, but a statewide Public Service Commission seat went unchalleged by Dems.  That’s changing, though.  The other great, good news for 2018: Democrats in all 14 of Georgia’s Congressional Districts have announced that they’re running. Many candidates: 25 so far. Since it’s important to know stuff and network, I’m building a list of Twitter handles for Georgia’s Democratic…
