Big crowd at ACLU of Georgia’s annual membership meeting

Look at us! Big crowd the ACLU of Georgia annual membership meeting tonight in Atlanta. Onstage, an old acquaintance from my days at the PSC, Robert Remar, accepts the group’s Lifetime Service Award. Rob represented poverty-rights groups in utility proceedings before the commission back in the 1980s, and the commissioners thought so highly of him they hired him as an administrative hearing officer for transportation cases. In accepting his well-deserved award, Rob talked about watching the national ACLU go from facing a $30 million deficit to achieving a $50 million surplus, thanks to Donald Trump. Dale Ho, Director of the ACLU National Voting Rights Project, delivered the keynote address. BTW, ACLU Georgia’s executive director is Andrea Young, daughter of former Atlanta Mayor…

Sorry, Fran. There will be Sunday voting in DeKalb (but Tucker Rec is out)

UPDATE: Download the complete early voting schedule from the DeKalb Board of Elections website. Despite public protest over the proposed shuttering of Tucker Recreation Center as an early voting site, the DeKalb Board of Elections voted today to approve staff’s early voting plan, which included a break away from using the center. So, no advance early voting starting April 30 in Tucker, although Tucker Library will open for voting May 14-18. After discussion, the Board voted 4-0 to approve Director Erica Hamilton’s proposal, which remained unchanged from the staff plan put forward at last month’s meeting. There will be only three advance early voting polling locations opening April 30: Dunwoody Library and the Board’s Memorial Drive offices will keep 7 a.m.-7 p.m.…

Reps. Scott Holcomb, Scot Turner: We need to upgrade vote machines

Read their letter to Governor Deal They state it will cost $21,000,000. I’d say that vote security in the age of Russian Influence would be a bargain at any price. What could possibly stand in their way? Oh yeah. Brian Kemp. Georgia’s Secretary of State thinks everything’s hunky-dory, except for the constant attacks by liberals on the sanctity of the vote. Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp: Threat or Menace?

Jonathan Grant @Brambleman Brian Kemp has an important job. Among other things, he oversees Georgia’s elections. He wants an even more important job: governor. Unfortunately, the Republican Secretary of State’s performance in office is causing widespread concern among people who care about voting rights, which should be everyone, but unfortunately isn’t. But that’s a long story that goes back a couple of centuries, so more on that another time. As for now, let’s just ask ourselves a question. Do we want this man to oversee an election that could catapult him into the governor’s mansion?  Many people are saying NO. No Problem: Tucker Rec Center CAN be used for Early Voting in #GA06

Update on Early Voting in DeKalb Tucker Rec Center IS Available as #GA06 Early Voting Site   Backround: DeKalb County is considering adding Early Voting sites for the Sixth District runoff. Citizens have called for Tucker Rec Center to be added, along with Chamblee Civic Center.  Current policy only allows one early voting site, at Memorial Drive, several miles outside the district.  While it may not be the intent, the effect was voter suppression. Using Tucker would open up Early Voting to tens of thousands of people in the Southeast section of the Sixth. The Board is waiting until its May 11 meeting to to decide. Early voting starts May 30.
