Revised Early Voting Sites and Hours
By Jonathan Grant
Several normal poll locations will be unavailable for the primary, and the situation remains in flux due to the Covid-19 pandemic because the buildings are closed. At Thursday’s DeKalb Board of Elections virtual meeting, Elections Director Erica Hamilton informed board members that 14 precinct poll locations will be unavailable for voting on June 9. More closures are possible. There will be a special called meeting on Friday, May 22 at 3:30 p.m. to discuss further possible changes and preparations. In addition, advance voting locations have been scaled back due to the public health crisis. First Baptist Church in Decatur and the Briarwood Recreation Center in Brookhaven have been removed as early voting sites. This leaves Dunwoody Library and Tucker-Reid Cofer Library as the only advance voting sites in North DeKalb.
Hamilton also told board members there will be 11 dropboxes for absentee ballots placed throughout the county during the primary election, although the locations have not yet been decided. Currently, there is one located at the Voter Registration Office at 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur GA 30032. More than 500 ballots have been deposited there, Hamilton said.
While many DeKalb County voters will be taking advantage of absentee ballots for the June 9 primary, there will still be many people who will trek to the polls. For those who don’t vote by mail, having early voting options is crucial to preventing crowds at precinct stations on Election day.
These are the advanced voting sites for the June 9 primary.
The usual three sites–Memorial Drive, South DeKalb Mall, and Dunwoody Library, will be open for three weeks, from May 15 through June 5. These locations will be open on two Saturdays, May 23 and 30, and on Sunday, May 31.
Two locations, Tucker Library and Stonecrest Library, will be open from May 25 through June 5, and on two Saturdays, May 23 and 30.
Five sites will be open for the final week of advance voting from June 1 through June 5: Betsy Branham Recreation Center in Atlanta; Briarwood Recreation Center in Brookhaven;Berean Christian Church Community Center in East DeKalb; and House of Hope Atlanta in South DeKalb.
The North DeKalb Senior Center in Chamblee, a regular advance voting site, was removed from consideration this time around for what I think are obvious reasons.
For DeKalb voters who want to vote absentee, DeKalb County will be providing drop boxes. More locations are planned. Check for updates at the DeKalb Board of Elections website and follow DeKalbVotes on Twitter.
